The Anchor Spanker™ is a professional-grade ground anchor installation tool.
It's designed to let the high-torque 1" impact wrench do the hard work of driving anchors into the ground instead of you wresting with hand crankers that leave you worn out and with little energy to do much once you get home.
Travis came up with the name over beers one evening. Put the marketing guy to shame, but we all loved the name the second we heard it. Work is hard, gotta have a little fun too.
Designed primarily for utility and telecommunications ground anchors, including many common 36"–60" anchor applications. Please review the compatibility chart above for further details.
High-torque tools from Milwaukee and Makita have performed well. The Makita has a bit more torque. Battery-powered 1" impact wrenches are especially convenient. Make sure your batteries are charged, especially in harder soil conditions.
When the first customer walked into Travis' shop asking him to make something to attach to his Milwaukee impact, Travis' eyes lit up. He loves tools and anything with torque (especially dirt bikes), and creating something like this, for that kind of device, was a labor of love.
Anyway, yes. Pairing it with a high-output cordless 1" impact wrench creates an exceptionally portable anchor installation system.
Yes, in most applications one operator can drive the anchor without the traditional two-person process. First digging a small starter/pilot hole improves the chance of success. You may struggle a bit on your own, especially if you're on the shorter side like the founders of Uwharrie Manufacturing. A pilot hole and a secure bench to stand upon sure helps.
Performs well in a wide variety of normal soil conditions. Extremely rocky ground, tree roots, or unusually dense material may require additional preparation. Please see the 'Conditions' graphic above for further details. We'll add that we've been with crews in the mountains that drove through shale, which was impressive. We've been in coastal Florida where crews drove anchors like a hot knife through butter. We think you'll find it works in the logical places. As we like to say, "rock is another story" (but we're working on it).
When you pull it out of the shipping box we think you'll enjoy its density and design. It's solid as can be, fabricated from heavy-duty steel for the repeated shock and torque of professional ground-anchor installation. It's seven pieces of steel, each with a purpose and lovingly welded by Travis into a torque-resistant piece of fine art that just so happens to spank the crap out of anchors. The design has been through multiple iterations and crews have noted using the tool over 1,000 times and still cranking.
Every Anchor Spanker™ is American-made, manufactured in Albemarle, North Carolina by Uwharrie Manufacturing LLC. We have a nice little write up about our company on this here website. North Carolina is our home; America is our country we love, and we couldn't imagine making these tools by hand, one at a time, any place else.
Intended for experienced contractors, utility crews and other qualified users familiar with ground-anchor installation and high-torque impact equipment. We could list all the types of people that should stay far away from high-torque tools, but if you're reading this, you're probably not one of them.
Very little. Attach securely to the appropriate 1" impact wrench, position it on the anchor and follow the recommended installation and safety procedures. It's a tool that attaches to another tool. We have found adding a bit of lubricant between the impact wrench and the Anchor Spanker, at least the first time, eases the removal and separation.
Depending on soil conditions, the anchor may need to be initially positioned or started with a hand-dug pilot hole before full-power installation begins. It'll make it easier. Something else that makes it easier is having something secure and sturdy to stand on to get it started, as a little more height seems to help (unless you're Shaquille O'Neal.) Please be safe and smart about that should you choose to do so.
Designed for repeated professional use. Field units have accumulated hundreds and in some cases more than 1,000 anchor installations.
Honestly, the way Travis builds these tools, meticulously and one at a time, with way more welding lines than people would expect, we're thinking it'll be around to hand down to your kid one day.
